Healthy Living

The Healthy Living initiative encompasses place-based educational, research and programmatic activities that promote physical, emotional and psychosocial wellbeing.

Goal

To work collaboratively with individuals, groups and communities to create conditions conducive to healthy, flourishing lives: social, environmental and economic justice, positive identity development, opportunities for deep learning, mastery and meaningful work, civic engagement, critical cultural and ecological awareness, physical activity, safety, access to nourishing, locally grown food, health and nutritional literacy, a sense of self-efficacy, and authentic relationships of mutually positive regard.

Objectives

  • Engage interested youth and adults in critical pedagogy around topics of deepest concern in the community, including access to education, employment, transportation, healthy food, medical care, and freedom from harassment, discrimination and violence.
  • Train teams of students and local community members in participatory action research method, and collectively design and undertake community-based research and health-promoting activities.
  • Involve students, local youth, and community members of all ages in community asset mapping and community-improvement projects.
  • Create opportunities for intergenerational and cross-cultural learning, relationship-building, and creative expression and exchange.
